The Filipino DNA: “15 Shades Of Pinoys”

Pinay Pie, Episode 1

Historians believe that Philippine culture and traditions represent the country’s numerous roots from prehistoric to precolonial times (before AD 900–1500). The Austronesian people, who migrated from South Asian countries, had a significant impact on Philippine culture, according to various reports. The mentioned groups include Malaysians, Chinese, and Indonesians. Later, Filipino blood combined with Spanish, American and Arab blood, producing a generation of mixed-blood Filipinos.

While reading those references, I don’t doubt that, as Filipinos, we have their blood in our system, demonstrated by the kind of food we eat, our cultures and traditions, and don’t forget our language, physical and facial traits.

Even though the Philippines has been influenced by numerous civilizations throughout history, it is critical to realise that the country has a distinct cultural identity that has been preserved and accepted over time. The country has kept its own DNA from its forebears and developed its own customs and culture.

Filipino cuisine, for example, exemplifies cultural fusion, as dishes such as adobo and pancit combine Spanish and Chinese cooking methods. Furthermore, traditional Filipino holidays such as Sinulog and Ati-Atihan emphasise the country’s indigenous roots and spiritual beliefs, displaying Filipino culture’s endurance in the face of external forces.

Before we dig deeper into Philippine history, which I admit I am not very good at, I’d want to return to our so-called “unique DNA,” which is now widely known around the world, I believe. Because of this, an increasing number of Filipinos are attracting the attention of an international audience.

So whether you are a natural born Filipino or Filipino by heart, you’ll learn a few things about the Philippines. It is a place bursting with a mix of traits and traditions that spell out what it’s like to be Filipino. Imagine a kaleidoscope, each piece a different shade of the Pinoy personality, coming together to paint a vibrant picture of life in the Philippines. The warmth and charm of the Filipino mentality are evident in everything from the bustle of Manila’s streets to the serenity of the province’s mountains.

At the centre of this cultural blend is the Filipino essence—a rich pattern that influences how Pinoys think, act, and live, no matter where they are in the world. Every Filipino contributes something unique, resulting in a culture as diverse as each person’s fingerprints.

But what makes Filipino culture fascinating and an enduring phenomenon?

From my perspective, it is because Filipinos are adaptable, which is a positive quality. Remember that this country is shaped by a history of different colonisations and natural disasters, which have helped the Filipino people become resilient and adaptable in the face of challenge. Allowing it to evolve and grow throughout time while it is still rooted in its heritage and history, which gives off a sense of pride for everyone in the tribe.

And this is why I am excited to write “15 Shades of Pinoys: The Filipino DNA ” where you will discover the colourful world of Filipino people. When I say colourful, it means that we will share positive ideas and encompass the contrast of the many layers of Filipino life, from the celebration of little things to big moments, creativity and ingenuity.

Okay, to start: I’m Filipino, and up until I started this article out of curiosity, I didn’t know everything there was to know about my heritage. And because I am not good at my history class, here I am torturing myself with all the history stuff, but honestly, I enjoy it. To be clear, I am happy to share these learnings; although some are obvious and known, I’d still be happy to discuss them here, starting off at the top of our list of 15 Shades of Pinoys: The Filpino DNA:

  1. Karaoke Lovers

For Filipinos, karaoke is fantastic way to socialize. It is a form of relief from the days work, and an expression of emotion, be it happiness or sadness.

The downside of it is that, until the first person grows bored singing, nobody else will pick up the microphone once they do.

I have read someweher that karaoke isn’t just a pastime anymore in the Philippines – it has become a way of life. It became an essential component of the culture and not only a form of amusement. Imagine a group of loved ones ready to break free from their inner shyness and take the microphone.

It’s about the shared experiences, the connection, and the laughter that lasts long after the last song fades, more than just hitting the proper notes.

Whether it’s a spontaneous chorus at a family fiesta or the camaraderie of a neighbourhood videoke bar, the atmosphere is packed with melody. Filipino karaoke can be enjoyed by everybody, regardless of vocal ability. Some people even like singing in the shower, which by the way becomes a place to practice prior to a party. Ain’t it right? LOL.

Number 2 on the list will be published after the lent. May you all have a meaningful Lenten Season!

Have a blissful week ahead loves,

Lillovy
